THE STORY

(Luke 10:25-37)

 

The lawyer’s first question: What do I have to do to inherit eternal life?

 

Jesus’ first question: How do you understand the law?

 

The lawyer’s response: Love God completely.  Love your neighbor as yourself. (Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18) 

 

Jesus’ response: Do this and you will live.

 

The lawyers second question: Who is my neighbor?

The lawyer is testing Jesus.

The lawyer’s question is loaded.

 

Jesus’ response: The parable of the good Samaritan…

 

Jesus’ second question: Who proved to be a neighbor?

Jesus changed the question!

 

The lawyer’s response: The one who showed mercy.

 

Jesus’ command: Go, and do likewise.

 

 

THE LESSON

 

Because Jesus is the only one to obey the law perfectly—self-justification is impossible—trust in Him.

 

Because Jesus loves you completely—

 

See people rightly—no one is a non-neighbor.

 

Be a neighbor.
