THE STORY

  • The “prayer” of the Pharisee  (verses 11-12)
    • Self-centered
    • Prideful
    • Boastful

  • The prayer of the tax collector  (verse 13)
    • God-centered
    • Humble

  • Jesus’ statement  (verse 14a)

“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other.”

  • A beautiful illustration of humility: children  (verses 15-17)

THE LESSON

  • Justification is by faith alone in Christ alone.

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”  (verse 14b)

  • Justification = permanently right with God.

  • This is only possible by receiving a righteousness that is not your own by faith.

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.  (Philippians 3:8-9)

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.  (Romans 3:21-25)
