The Righteousness and Freedom of God

Romans 9:14-23

GOD’S JUSTICE

(verses 14-18)

 

Objection #1: Is God unjust?

Paul defends God’s justice with God’s own words.

 

  • Exodus 33:19 – “I…will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”

 

  • Exodus 9:16 – “But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.”

 

Conclusions:

  • Salvation is not dependent on human will or effort, but on God who shows mercy.

 

  • God shows mercy on whomever He wills and hardens whomever He wills.

 

GOD’S FREEDOM

(verses 19-23)

 

Objection #2: Why does God still find fault?

Paul defends God’s judgment with God’s own nature.

 

  • God is the potter and has freedom over the clay.

 

  • The clay is fallen humanity.

 

Conclusion:

  • God is free to display His wrath, His power, and His mercy to make His glory known.
